Why Daily Flow Is Not the Whole Story: Wastewater Strength & Dosing Patterns

How many gallons of wastewater does a property generate each day?

It is an important question. But it is not always the most important one.

Daily flow helps determine how much wastewater a system must receive and manage. Yet two properties producing the same number of gallons can place very different demands on their wastewater systems.

What is in the wastewater matters.

When those gallons arrive matters.

How the wastewater is delivered to treatment and dispersal components matters.

Daily Flow Measures Volume, Not the Entire Treatment Demand

Wastewater systems are commonly discussed in terms of gallons per day.

That makes sense. Tanks, pumps, treatment components, and dispersal areas all need to accommodate an expected volume of wastewater.

But volume does not fully describe what the system is being asked to treat.

Consider two properties that each generate 1,000 gallons of wastewater in a day.

One may produce relatively typical domestic wastewater throughout the day.

The other may generate wastewater containing a much greater concentration of organic material, solids, or other constituents that require treatment.

The gallon count may be identical.

The treatment demand is not.

This distinction becomes particularly important when evaluating commercial, community, recreational, and other properties where wastewater characteristics may differ significantly from those of a typical residence.

What Does “Wastewater Strength” Mean?

Wastewater strength describes the concentration of material within the wastewater that must be treated before the effluent can be safely dispersed or discharged.

In practical terms, stronger wastewater places a greater treatment demand on the system.

Wastewater characteristics can be influenced by how a property is used. Examples may include:

A campground, for example, may produce wastewater differently from a single-family residence. A commercial property with food preparation may differ from an office building. A seasonal facility may experience very different conditions during its busiest months than during the rest of the year.

That is why the type of property matters when evaluating wastewater performance.

Timing Matters Too

There is another question beyond how much wastewater is generated:

When does it reach the system?

Imagine 600 gallons entering a system gradually throughout the day.

Now imagine the same 600 gallons arriving in several large bursts.

The daily total is identical, but the system does not necessarily experience those two patterns the same way.

Large, concentrated doses can place greater hydraulic stress on treatment and dispersal components. Smaller, more controlled doses can provide time between discharges for treatment processes and soil dispersal to occur.

This is why a daily flow total can hide important information.

A flow meter may show that a property remains within its expected gallons per day while more detailed monitoring reveals significant peaks, irregular dosing, or concentrated periods of wastewater generation.

A Michigan Campground Demonstrated the Difference

Guardian encountered this issue while investigating a Michigan campground that had experienced three dispersal-system failures in approximately 15 years.

Each time a drain bed failed, it was replaced. Each replacement became larger.

Yet the failures continued.

Guardian investigated the system rather than assuming another larger drainfield would solve the problem.

Flow monitoring revealed something important:

The total wastewater volume was within the scope of the system’s design.

Based on gallons alone, excessive daily flow did not explain the repeated failures.

But Guardian found two additional conditions.

First, the wastewater was entering the dispersal system in large, sporadic doses instead of being distributed more evenly over time.

Second, effluent sampling showed that the wastewater reaching the dispersal area was approximately four times stronger than typical residential effluent.

So although the drainfield was receiving an acceptable total volume, the wastewater it received was not behaving like the domestic wastewater assumptions that might normally be associated with that volume.

Why Stronger Wastewater Can Affect a Dispersal Area

A soil dispersal system does more than provide a place for water to disappear.

It is part of the wastewater treatment process.

When effluent reaches the dispersal area, the soil and the biological environment within it continue treating the wastewater as it moves through the system.

If the wastewater reaching that area carries a greater treatment load than anticipated, the effect on the soil can be different from what would be expected based on gallons alone.

At the campground, Guardian’s investigation found a thin clogging layer between the drain bed and the sand fill beneath it.

Below that restrictive layer was clean, dry, coarse sand.

The broader soil was capable of accepting water, but wastewater was ponding above the restrictive interface.

The combination of higher-strength effluent and the way that wastewater was being dosed helped explain why simply making the dispersal area larger had not corrected the underlying problem.

Flow Monitoring and Sampling Answer Different Questions

This case also demonstrates why different types of data are useful.

Flow monitoring asks: How much wastewater is moving through the system, and when?

It can help identify:

Effluent sampling asks: What are the characteristics of the wastewater being treated or discharged?

Sampling can provide information that a flow meter cannot.

A property owner may therefore have a system that appears acceptable when looking only at gallons per day while other information reveals a very different operating condition.

Neither flow monitoring nor sampling should automatically be viewed as the answer by itself.

They are tools for developing a more complete picture.

Dosing Can Be Part of the Solution

When wastewater arrives at a dispersal area in large doses, changing how it is delivered may improve how the system manages that flow.

For the campground, Guardian recommended changing the dosing approach so effluent would be delivered through smaller, more frequent doses throughout the day and week.

The purpose was not to reduce the property’s total daily wastewater volume.

It was to manage that volume differently.

Whether this approach is appropriate depends on the system. Dosing strategies should be based on the design, equipment, site conditions, wastewater characteristics, and actual operating needs of the property.

Pretreatment May Address a Different Problem

Changing the dosing pattern addresses how wastewater is delivered.

It does not necessarily change the strength of that wastewater.

At the campground, Guardian also recommended additional pretreatment before the effluent reached the drain beds. The objective was to reduce the strength of the wastewater toward a level more comparable to domestic effluent.

This distinction matters.

A wastewater system can face both:

Correcting one does not automatically correct the other.

This is one reason site-specific evaluation is so important.

Property Use Can Change the Wastewater Profile

Wastewater systems are designed around assumptions about how a property will be used.

But properties change.

A residence may gain occupants. A campground may add sites or amenities. A commercial building may change tenants. An office may become a restaurant or event space. A seasonal facility may expand into year-round operation.

Those changes can affect more than total water consumption.

They may change:

A system that worked well for the property’s original use may struggle after the wastewater profile changes, even when the physical system has not changed.

Measure Before You Assume

When a wastewater system is backing up, ponding, or repeatedly failing, it can be tempting to focus immediately on the most visible problem.

The drainfield must be too small.

The soil must be bad.

The property must be using too much water.

Sometimes one of those conclusions will prove correct.

But good wastewater troubleshooting requires evidence.

Questions worth answering include:
